TRAVEL BLOG – Sonya Sloan, memories woven together with laughter!

Our recent holiday at Quinta do Falcoa near Tomar in Portugal wasn’t just a horse riding holiday. It was so much more!! Of course, there were lessons in the riding schools under the guidance of coach Pedro Farto, who was always on hand to offer enthusiastic advice, often with a touch of humour. We enjoyed the beauty of Portugal on horseback out in the countryside, riding through vineyards, olive groves and eucalyptus plantations.

With horses such as Fakia, Elvis and Malmador, each with their own charming personality. We were treated to horses who were loved and looked after impeccably by the grooms, including Maria, who, with her calm demeanour, worked hard every day, always looking after the animals whilst remaining cheerful and friendly towards the guests.

In fact, the whole team at Quinta do Falcoa showed respect for the horses, the visitors and their work. They were genuinely happy to be working under their leader, Rui Salvador. Rui and his wonderful wife, Sandra, welcomed guests as if they were part of their own family and made our stay feel relaxed and comfortable. We were welcomed to their dinner table with daily servings of delicious traditional Portuguese cuisine and left their table and Quinta feeling full from their meal and their love. Truly incredible people!!

Floor Shoenmachers of Global Horse Promotions gave us the holiday we’d booked – and so much more!! Every day was a surprise. She made sure every detail ran smoothly and that we were happy and content throughout our stay. We are truly grateful for this. Thank you, Floor.

It wasn’t just a riding trip; it was the Portuguese countryside, the kindness of the people, and memories woven together with laughter and Portuguese hospitality. We left with new friendships and a genuine fondness for Quinta do Falcoa and Portugal. A truly fantastic experience.
